The Icelandic Sheepdog
in Canada
I am often asked "What should the Ideal Canadian Icelandic Sheepdog Look like?"
Well as they say a Picture is worth a Thousand Words!
Here is a Very! Fine Drawing of an Ideal Adult Male Icelandic Sheepdog in Med Coat.
Hs has is a good example of the most typical white Markings within the breed.
Clearly a Female should be more refined, and typically a bit longer in loin.
Ch Greenstone AJay, I have often had folks, ask if he was the model for the above drawing and the answer is NO!. The drawing was done four years before Ajay was even born.  So here is a good example of a adult male in the "flesh"
Red Sable with White- Med Coat
I am often asked to explain the differences seen in the show ring in regards to the Icelandic Sheepdog, and the truth of the matter is..
Yes, we lack overall breed Type in the breed at this time.
Now, lets be fair, there is always going to be some differences between type in regards to what each kennel produces.. this is normal and expected in all breeds.
However at this time, in the Icelandic Sheepdog Ring, we have a real mix of different types, and I can understand why judges, and fellow Breeders are asking what is the norm..
The drawings are bases on the Current CKC/FCI Standard
It is my hope that these drawings will help answer some of the questions on what to be looking for in regards to some of the finer points of the breed, included are examples of the most common "faults" seen today in the show rings..
When these drawings where done, our biggest issue with eyes, was round eyes, which is still often! seen within our breed. Now the issue has become light eyes, and as amazed as I am to write this, Blue eyes in our Breed.

The CKC/FCI standard is VERY CLEAR- The Icelandic Sheepdog is to have a DARK BROWN EYE COLOR!

Light Brown, Hazel, or Blue Eyes are all to be Faulted per the Standard!
Per the CKC/FCI Standard, there are very few faults listed but one worth noting, is that Black Mantle and Black Saddle Marked Dogs are to be faulted.

This a very rare trait to date in Canada, so at this time, it not a issue.
